ILVA@FuoriSalone 2019 Wood and its finishes take center stage

ILVA, a reference point in the field of wood coatings and a historic Italian brand that is part of the international corporation IVM Group, a worldwide leader in this area, takes part in FuoriSalone 2019 with three different initiatives. Three partnerships that reveal the depth of the range of ILVA coating solutions, confirming the company’s role in advanced research and interaction with the world of design.

For the FuoriSalone 2019, ILVA is the partner of The Forest of Violins, a striking installation inside the Cortile d’Onore of the State University of Milan, in the context of the exhibition-event INTERNI HUMAN SPACES, from 8 to 19 April 2019. Created by the architecture firm Piuarch based on a concept by Nemo Monti, The Forest of Violins illustrates the value of resonant Norway spruce from Val di Fiemme. A tribute to the natural heritage of the Paneveggio Nature Park, known as the “Forest of Stradivari” for the extraordinary acoustic characteristics of its Norway spruce, a wood that has always been used to make the soundboards of the finest violins. This unique site was seriously damaged by a wave of extreme weather in the fall of 2018, which destroyed about 14 million trees in Northeastern Italy.

ILVA immediately decided to support this project with enthusiasm – in collaboration with Provincia Autonoma di Trento and Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme, with the contribution of CityLife – in which the protagonist is wood and its value, in a symbolic portrayal of the force of nature: two large Norway spruce trunks salvaged from Val di Fiemme stand out on the loggia of the Cortile d’Onore of the University. The roots of the trees uprooted by the wind, recollection of violated nature, protrude from the balustrade, supported by a large architectural trestle.

Made with the Norway spruce timber of Val di Fiemme protected by the ILVA Unico wood varnish, a transparent impregnator, sealer and topcoat in a single product, the trestle represents the connection between things and ideas, the ancestral relationship between technique and nature, raw material and transformation. An archetype of the work of man to heal and repair, the installation is a tribute to the territories and forests of the Northeast; the cultures that have evolved into trades and crafts on the basis of that natural heritage; the local wood supply chain; the artistry that creates exceptional musical instruments from that wood; and, finally, the musicians who play those instruments, filling us with emotion.

During Milan Design Week 2019 ILVA is also a partner of the event COLOUR MATCH organized by NCS Colour Centre Italia with art direction by Gianluca Sgalippa. This initiative presents fifteen digital works that were winners, from September 2018 to March 2019, of the permanent competition of the same name, in which designers and creative talents of different backgrounds submit their personal geometric-chromatic patterns using the NCS®© color notation system. In the courtyard of Galleria Monopoli on Via Ventura, in the Lambrate Design District, synonymous with innovation and experimentation, the digital works become reality thanks to the technical support of ILVA.

The company’s PL800 coating has been used for the production of the panels measuring 50 x 70 cm, displayed like paintings in an art gallery. The theme of color is underscored by the use of a palette of about 60 variations of this matte pigmented polyurethane finish (20 gloss), which also stands out for its extreme ease of application.

COLOUR MATCH stands out for its rigorous, rhythmical set-up where the chromatic works are presented in a large white cube. The exhibition stimulates reflections on color and its value in the world of design.

The chromatic panels, shown in a sequence, are then replicated on an extended surface to create a colorful backdrop for selfies, in a playful, contemporary media interpretation.

From the FuoriSalone to the Salone Satellite, the platform of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile for designers under 35, where ILVA presents Perfect Imperfection. Created by Maria Camilla Scalfi, Perfect Imperfection won the contest organized in 2018 by the company with Giulio Cappellini, creative director of Istituto Marangoni Milano Design, aimed at students in the masters program in Interior Design, Surface & Textile Design and Product Design Management, as well as the students in the final year of the three-year courses in Interior Design, Product Design and Visual Design.
